Why does this look works

Alexandra is giving us a great example of how an outfit made of solid colors can still look exciting - if the colors of the outfit are dark, play with texture and interesting details. Notice how all her clothes have different texture: knitted hat, "tapestry"-like scarf, leather gloves, suede shoes. The military-style buttons on her coat add even more visual interest, and if that's not enough, Alexandra is hinting there's more color by slightly opening here coat to show off just a piece of a spring colorful dress underneath.
