find of the week: take-away eetwinkel zwaan

Are you not exactly what people call a ‘cooking prince(ss)’? Or do have a passion for ‘great cuisine’ but lack the time? Then I hope you work at WTC as Eetwinkel Zwaan is your solution to tasteful quasi-home-made dinners.

The way it works at Zwaan is that they do the ‘m.e.p.’ as we call it in chef’s terms. M.e.p. stands for ‘mise-en-place’ indicating that the preparatory work has been done, the dish just needs to be finished.

new in amsterdam: the seafood bar

Another new opening in Amsterdam is the Seafood Bar. Set up like a canteen in New York’s meat district, the venue is white, spacious, ‘scrubbed-bare’ brick walls, use of natural materials. Main eye catcher is the bar with glass ‘windows’ displaying fresh fish and crustacea in ice, as well as seafood dishes as sushi and fish salads.

new in amsterdam: hotel chocolat

This week is all about new openings in Amsterdam. On the 14th of June, luxury British chocolatier and cocoa grower, Hotel Chocolate opened its doors. Like the new Bar Oldenhof, Hotel Chocolat also offers people to ‘escape’ from their busy lives. Hotel Chocolat does so with high-quality, splendidly presented chocolates. Already when opening the box, you forget about the ugly side of life. Then, when tasting the chocolate, your mind brings you to a bounty island. Quite like quality wines, the finish of the chocolates are long and luscious.

new in amsterdam: bar oldenhof

I am one of those people who would love to leave today’s rushed lifestyle and step back into time. This is quite possible at Bar Oldenhof.

Fancy having a quiet drink in a ‘presidential‘ arm chairs and read a newspaper - made from real paper, as in web 0.0? Or how about sipping a cocktail while reclining on a chaisse longue?

terrace of the week: de odessa

With interchangeable weather like we are experiencing now, we have to enjoy every drop of sun we get, and continue the party when it’s chilly (and rainy). I’ve just found the place for you to enjoy summer life in Amsterdam.

The ship De Odessa is a replica of an old Russian trading ship and has got 3 decks, each with their own look and feel.

daffodil - worn once by the riches

Thirty years ago, when second-hand stores only offered ‘dumped’ army clothes, Ans Chevanche opened her shop of used quality fashion.

Located in the upmarket Willemspark area, it has taken a while before neighbours felt comfortable to enter the second-hand shop.

terrace of the week: de pilsvogel

If you find yourself on the ‘Cuyp’ and want to sit down, have a drink and enjoy fresh city air… head to De Pilsvogel. This bar is strategically located on a side street of the market and opposite het Ijscuypje (see best ice cream in Amsterdam). If there’s no seat available, then cross the triangular square and visit Het Paardje or Wijnbar Boelen & Boelen (see best wine bar in Amsterdam).

'restaurant' of the week: sunny's burger joint

I’m happy I don’t need to make a ranking of the places I’m reviewing… as I wouldn’t know: which burger place I think is the best: BurgerBar, Maxie’s or Sunny’s burger?

At Sunny’s burger joint I enjoyed a chicken burger with the original sauce (E5). It was big, it was juicy and very tasty - not overly greasy and not drenched in sauce.
